From Mohammed Daib , Bauchi
Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar of Bauchi State has lamented that Nigeria has been undermined by corruption, especially in the last 16 years which also denied its citizens access to basic needs to enable them enjoy democratic dividends.
However, the governor has assured assured that President Muhammadu Buhari has left no one in doubt on his strong stance to fight corruption to a standstill in Nigeria.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy governor, Nuhu Gidado, disclosed this yesterday while addressing members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) when they staged a rally in Bauchi.
He expressed the Bauchi State government’s support for the President’s fight against corruption and other forms of impunity.
“Our communities have been left without basic and essential services due to the fact that leaderships before now wrongfully took more for themselves than they give to the rightful owners. Our present has been darkened by organised and unwholesome abuse of powers, laws and public resources,” the governor said.
Abdullahi added that the APC would rise to the challenge to rid Nigeria corruption.
He said: “That mission was doggedly led by the veteran people’s president, Muhammadu Buhari. It was supported by a potent progressive coalition and by the grace of Almighty God delivered by the generality of Nigerians, particularly to dismantle the corrupt establishment that has entrenched its roots across the country.
“The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has left no one in doubt of the will to tackle corruption as one of its core areas of focus. Our great party, the APC, has also made it a priority to institutionalised transparency and accountability while weeding out the ingrained culture of corruption.”
Abubakar stressed that, on its part, the Bauchi State government has taken the same path to fight corruption as well as restore sanity and reduce unnecessary government spending and leakages.
“We have even gone forward to take deliberate and painstaking action to recover resources of government taken carted away by individuals that have previously held public offices. These efforts have ended in huge recovery successes second to none in the country,” he said.
In his address, the Bauchi NLC chairman, Comrade Hashimu Muhammad, said organised labour was in support of the good works started by President Buhari, especially his fight against corruption.
Represented by the Bauchi State NLC Vice Chairman, Comrade Danjuma Saleh, he added that they decided to organise the rally to show their support for the fight against corruption.
According to him, corruption has been the bane of Nigeria which resulted in its underdevelopment as a nation and failure on the part of its people.
He added that they had observed with keen interest the attempt by some people to sabotage or discourage the President from pursuing his fight against corruption as he promised Nigerians.
“We believe this will not go down well with the Nigerian workers and the common man who largely depend on less than one dollar a day. The Nigerian workers and the organised labour will resist any attempt from any quarters to scuttle the President’s stance against corruption and impunity,” he added
