Tinubu, Shettima Support Groups Allege Non-Mobilization By APC Headquarters

By Akombo Aondona, Abuja

Nearly three months into the campaign for the 2023 General Elections, there are indications that the National Headquarters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), some APC governors and chieftains of the party are holding back their financial support for the APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, investigation by The Dream Daily Newspaper has revealed.

Several Tinubu/Shettima Campaign support groups’ leaders told The Dream Daily Newspaper that their activities were currently being hampered by non-disbursement of campaign mobilization funds to them as is the norm in election years.

More tellingly, these support groups also revealed that some APC governors and chieftains of the party appeared not predisposed to funding the Tinubu/Shettima presidential bid as expected of them.

The support group leaders disclosed that the APC presidential campaign, which has held in a number of states nationwide is being funded solely by Tinubu, Shettima and their mentees.

The non-mobilisation of the support groups by the National Headquarters of the APC, according to their leaders, has crippled their house-to-house campaign schedules, with just two months to the presidential election.

The development has engendered low morale within the rank of the Tinubu/Shettima support groups sampled by The Dream Daily Newspaper across Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Kogi and Benue states as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), threatening the chances of the party in 2023.

A Tinubu/Shettima support group leader in Abuja who is also a national member of the APC women presidential campaign council and national women leader of one of the support groups told The Dream Daily Newspaper: “My brother, it is well o! Till now we have not heard anything from them (APC National Headquarters). Only God will help our party.”

Similarly, another support group leader from Akwa Ibom State who is the state coordinator of one of the Tinubu/Shettima support group stated: “My brother I don’t understand them o! These millionaires are always heartless to people who work for them. I don’t understand the strategy. Few weeks to election no mobilization.”

Prodded on the sources of funding of the APC campaign witnessed thus far, the state coordinator claimed that Tinubu, Shettima and their inner circles are the ones funding it. He added: “But we need house-to-house campaign which the party has to fund. I have been spending my money for this campaign for the love I have for Sen. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We need funds and we don’t know what is delaying them from releasing funds to us. Up till now they have not release a kobo.”

Also in a telephone chat, another Tinubu/Shettima support group leader said: “You journalists need money for our publicity but we have not been given funds for campaign yet. That’s why we have not commenced house-to-house campaign. As soon as that is done from our party national headquarters, we shall mobilise our members and you will be duly informed.”

In Kogi State, sources alleged to The Dream Daily Newspaper that “Governor Yahaya Bello is not in a good term with the APC presidential candidate Sen Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu”.

The source, who is also the state coordinator of one of the APC support group for Tinubu stressed: “We are having challenges here in Kogi State especially due to the disagreement between the elephant in the room (Yahaya Bello) and Tinubu. We are having financial challenges to mobilise our members to embark on house-to-house campaign for our candidates ahead of 2023.”

In Benue State, another campaign support leader who also said they have not been mobilised to campaign for the APC presidential candidate, simply stated, “we are waiting for them” (National Headquarters of the APC).

However, a source at the APC National Secretariat, Abuja refuted the claims by the support groups. The source said: “Though the issue is with those in charge of publicity but the campaign is moving on smoothly across the states as you can see. But I don’t know what those in the Publicity Department are doing.”

Recall that in his maiden media meeting with the APC media correspondents, after seven months of taking charge, APC National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu promised that the APC National Publicity Secretary, Barr Felix Morka, would be the arrowhead of the APC presidential campaign publicity from the National Headquarters of the party.

Adamu also pledged to close the gap between the party and the media and to keep Nigerian abreast of the party’s campaign activities.

However, not much has been accomplished by the APC National Chairman in this regard at the National Headquarters of the APC thus far.
