From Ankeli Emmanuel, Sokoto
Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Sokoto State, Prof. Ahmad Ladan Ala, has expressed disappointment with teachers’ attitude to work when he went on an unscheduled monitoring and supervision exercise across selected schools in the state.
Prof. Ladan expressed worries over alleged nonchalant attitude displayed by teachers in public schools as well as their lack of commitment and absenteeism.
The schools visited by the commissioner included Junior Secondary School (JSS) Gidan Gara, Government Secondary School (GSS) Amanawa, JSS Bimasa, and GSS Tureta.
During the visit, the commissioner wondered why 23 members of staff, including the principal of GSS Tureta, were absent. Only three teachers were found in school during the visit.
Similarly, in JSS Bimasa the commissioner recorded poor attendance among both staff and students, indicating the possible glaring reality of other schools.
In his reaction to the development, the commissioner directed that the principals of GSS Tureta and JSS Bimasa been given query for absenteeism, nonchalant attitude to duty, and failure to ensure regular attendance.
According to the commissioner, quality education can only be delivered with dedication, accountability, and commitment to assigned responsibilities even as he assured of effective supervision going forward.
Prof. Ladan was accompanied on the visit by the ministry’s Director of Adminstration, Abubakar Umar Salame, the Director of Quality, Abdulkadir Umar Alkammawa, and the Director of Quality Assurance, Arabic Board, Muhammad Sani Usman.
