The Adamawa State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has said that it lost eight members in the recent attacks by herdsmen in some parts of the state.
Mr Rodney Nathan, chairman of the state NUT, made this known while speaking with reporters in Yola.
Nathan said that the crisis had led to displacement of hundreds of teachers and urged the federal government to stop the killings and bring the perpetrators to book to serve as deterrence to criminals.
He commended Governor Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa for constituting a high profile committee of enquiry with the aim of bringing perpetrators of such dastardly acts to book, and urged the governor to match words with actions.
Nathan said: ” In the recent crisis that engulfed some parts of the state, we lost eight teachers. We lost one headmaster in Damsa, three teachers in Numan, three in Song and one in Madagali. We do not have the adequate number of those displaced but they are over 100.
The chairman appealed to the people of the state to uphold tolerance towards a peaceful coexistence.
According to him, “without peace, there will be no development, no one can go about his normal social life.”
He also admonished teachers who indulge in drug abuse to desist from the vice. According to him,” a teacher should be a role model to every child. Drug addiction by teachers is unethical and inimical to moulding the character of children.”
