Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria will on Thursday 30 January, 2025 honour 123 members of staff from various service units for their exceptional contributions and commitment to advancing the institution’s mission and their respective fields.

The award ceremony holds by 2.30p.m. at the Yusufu Bala Usman Hall on the ABU main campus at Samaru under the chairmanship of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kabiru Bala.

Among those to be celebrated, Dr. Joyce Onoromhenre Agofure will receive the “Most Cited Staff of the Year Award” in acknowledgment of her significant contributions to the objectives of ABU. This accolade highlights the dedication and the positive impact she has made both within the academic community and on the global stage.

Dr. Agofure is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in the Department of English and Literary Studies (Literature Section), Faculty of Arts, Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria. She has held various roles in the university, including serving as the Postgraduate Coordinator, among other positions.

Dr Agofure has been the recipient of several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Fulbright Foreign Student Researcher Fellowship from the University of Idaho, USA, and the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) African Humanities Program Postdoctoral Fellowship. In addition, she participated in the ACLS-funded Postdoctoral Research Residency at Rhodes University, South Africa. Her accolades also include the African Humanities Program Mentoring and Application-Preparation Workshop Grant, as well as the Social Science Research Council/African Peacebuilding Network Individual Research Fellowship (APN IRF).

Dr. Agofure has participated in various workshops funded by the Social Science Research Council/African Peacebuilding Network, including the APN and Next Gen Research Methods Workshop in Casablanca, Morocco, and the APN and Next Gen Dissemination and Writing Workshops in Accra, Ghana.

 Furthermore, she received the APN/Next Gen Panel Support for the 2023 African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA) Conference held in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo. In addition, she was awarded the Aftermath of Slavery in East Africa (ASEA) Grant for the 2023 Tanzania Conference on Slavery and Post-Slavery at the University of Dar es Salaam and served as a grant awardee and convener at the 9th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS 2023) held at the University of Cologne, Germany.

Dr. Agofure’s research interests span a diverse range of fields, including Environmental Humanities, Postcolonial Studies, Gender Discourse, and African peacebuilding. She has made significant contributions to these areas through her extensive work as both an author and a reviewer of numerous journal articles and book chapters. Her publications address critical socio-political, environmental, and gender issues, engaging with both national and international audiences.

With a commitment to advancing knowledge and understanding in her fields of expertise, Dr. Agofure is eager to continue her research endeavours. She looks forward to making further contributions that will enrich academic discourse and promote positive change in the society.
