There were indications on Thursday, 25 March 2022 that President Muhammadu Buhari would make public his list of consensus candidates for the national executive positions up for grabs at Saturday’s National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This plan by the President, The Dream Daily Newspaper learnt, is to force the hands of the convention delegates to toe the President’s line and secure the APC national body for him.

However, the choice of the president for the position of national chairman of APC remains hazy. Sources at the APC National Secretariat confided in The Dream Daily Newspaper that the President has made up his mind on his man, whom he also made known to the party in a meeting with all the aspirants and the governors.

At that meeting, President Buhari reportedly said: “I don’t want to hand over power to certain elements. So the only way I will help APC is for you to be ready to abide by my candidates. Make my work easier because I don’t want to spend the whole day at the Eagle Square (convention venue),” the source quoted the President as saying.

Another source said: “The President wants to go for a consensus but some aspirants and powerful party stalwarts are pushing for the real contest at the convention. That’s why the President is yet to make the consensus list public”.
