APC, Osinbajo, Boss Mustapha And The 2023 Presidential Ticket Carrot

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo

Some politicians and political parties would say anything to garner votes and win elections. On the evidence of the contradictory campaign talks of ceding the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 presidential ticket – a single, indivisible item or if you like carrot – to both the South-West and the South-East, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation ((SGF), Boss Mustapha are deep in the dye of this type of politicians. By extension, we can also safely say that their party, the ruling APC, is in on this game of deceit as well.
We are concerned by the recourse to ethnicity, even nepotism, by the ruling APC as the party campaigns for the second term bid of President Muhammadu Buhari. This condemnable campaign strategy of promising the 2023 APC presidential ticket to the Igbo of the South-East and the Yoruba of the South-West at the same time has the potential of pitching both ethnic group against each not just in the future 2023 elections but now for the 2019 campaign, with dire consequence for a peaceful poll and current state of unease in the country.
Only irresponsible politicians would go about campaigning on the ethnic card in the country as this fans the embers of indigenous identity politics, which our nation’s history has shown to be ruinous.
As the party in power at the centre led by a President of acclaimed integrity who has purportedly performed wonders in his first term of four years, Nigerians expect the APC and its members from top to bottom to campaign on their performance scorecard.
The obvious turn to clannish sentiments by Vice President Osinbajo, a pastor, senior lawyer and professor of law is dangerous, condemnable and unexpected of him based on his commended personal and professional pedigrees.
It is also a pathetic signification of a disconnected Osinbajo and APC from the Yoruba voters and a desperate attempt to reconnect to the South-West, given that the vice president and APC have obviously failed to deliver on their 2015 campaign to restructure the country, which is the topmost demand of the Yoruba Race from the Nigerian federation.
However desperate he might be to appeal to his fellow Yoruba to vote for President Buhari and himself, Prof. Osinbajo plumbs a new low by such bare-faced tribalism. Is the Vice President unaware of the historical fact that it was the (mainly)Yoruba Action Group (AG) and (majorly) Igbo National Council of Nigeria Citizens (NCNC) carpet-crossing tango in the defunct Western Region Assembly that lighted the cinders of First Republic politics which conflagration eventually consumed many politicians of that era via the grisly January 15, 1966 coup, from which consequences this country has not emerged?
It may well be that those who cannot see themselves victorious in 2019 on the strength of their performance in office or effective appeal to the electorate based on deep engagements and communicated shared vision and are now hedging Nigeria towards the precipices through ethnic, divisive campaigns.
We urge these despicable kinds of politicians and political parties to cease and desist from this ignoble path in order not to plunge this country into chaos over 2019 as many observers of the precarious Nigerian situation fear, including the government of the United States (U.S.).
If they insist on going down this pathway to anarchy and take Nigeria down with them, this set of politicians and their parties should know that God helping, some of us would hold them accountable at the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague, however long it might take.
