Government and private businesses were suspended across the five states in the South-East on Monday as citizens remained indoors in compliance with the sit-at-home order issued by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to mark the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra and remember the Igbo victims of the Nigeria-Biafra War of 1967-1970.
Also, all roads leading into and from the south eastern states were empty as the order succeeded totally across the region.
Banks, filling stations, schools as well as markets were all shut down too, giving the states ghostly ambience.
Governors of the five eastern states appeared to support the lock-down order in a fresh development which appears to demonstrates new heights and support for IPOB and Kanu in their on-going agitation to break away from the Nigerian union and revive defunct Biafra.
Apparently delighted with the total success of his order, Kanu, in a live facebook broadcast on Monday commended all the five governors for commemorating the day.
He praised Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, for constructing a cenotaph in memory of fallen Biafran war victims.
He also lauded Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state for releasing detained members of the Zionist Biafra group in his state.
Furthermore, Kanu commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia for “speaking truth to power” by supporting market closures in his state.
Kanu also noted the turn-around of Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state on his earlier threat to confiscate the shop of any trader in Ebonyi who obeyed the stay-at-home order.
He said the governors had behaved well on his order which had won his administration “for the first time”.
“Maybe they are beginning to repent but I don’t want to be quick in saying that they have repented until I’m sure they have. If they have repented, that will be nice for us all,” the IPOB leader stated.
Kanu charged all Ndigbo and other indigenous groups in Biafran territories to unite on the cause.
