The Shehu Of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El Kanemi, has call on United Nations (UN) to support Borno State in its quest to resettle victims of Boko Haram insurgency and mitigate the effects of humanitarian crisis in the state.
The royal father made the appeal when the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations in charge of humanitarian services, Mr Tobi Langer and the outgoing officer of the organization for community and humanitarian activities international (OCHAI), Mr Tim Timor, paid him courtesy visit in his palace.
The Shehu said the call became necessary in view of the magnitude of the problem despite concerted efforts by state and federal governments.
This, he said, was in addition to what the UN and other international organizations are currently doing to mitigate the adverse effects of the humanitarian crisis in Borno state.
He assured the readiness of traditional and religious leaders to aid the ongoing reconstructions and resettlement programmes.
The Shehu recalled that Borno had never suffered like this time of insurgents in its history “of all the calamities that had befallen Borno in its one thousand two hundred years of existence, none can be compared to Boko Haram which led to great number of deaths, kidnapping and forced over two million people out of their places of origin.”
According to him, no religion teaches such barbaric acts of madness as being preached by the Boko Haram sect.
Responding Langer said he was in the state to assess the activities of all UN agencies which he said deserved the support of the UN.
He commended the Shehu, government and people of Borno State as well as President Buhari especially in their effort to restore peace to the North East.
Timor said had been in Borno for the past six months contributing to the welfare of the displaced.
The Shehu in appreciation presented souvenirs to Mr Tobi Langer and Tim Timor.
