A bomb suspected to have been detonated by two female suicide bombers at Malkohi IDP camp, has killed the duo and five others while 13 people, including four National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officials were injured.
Adamawa commissioner of information, Ahmed Sajoh, confirmed the incident and casualty figures to journalists in Yola shortly after visiting the victims of the blast at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola.
Sajoh lamented that an unaccompanied toddler was among the dead just as he expressed sadness that even those on humanitarian service were not spared by the suicide bombers .
He explained that one of the NEMA officials has been treated and discharged while 2 others sustained minor injuries. The one who sustained the most critical injury was responding to treatment, he added.
The commissioner noted that Governor Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, has directed the state emergency management agency to foot the bills of the injured.
Sajoh added that the state government was working in conjunction with all security agencies to ensure a security around all IDP camps, noting that security agencies were currently re-screening all IDPs at the Malkohi camp.
“We have discussed with security agencies on how to fortify all the camps in the state and a re-screening of the IDPs is currently on going,” he said.
He added that the government would ensure that the security operatives analyzed the debris of the explosive device used as part of the process of arresting such ugly incident in the future.
Sajoh further noted that since it was a suicide bombing, the attack has amply portrayed that the fighting power and spirit of the insurgents have been seriously degraded.
He also urged residents to be extra vigilante and report suspicious persons to security personnel.
Confirming the incident, Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Adaji, noted the police were part of the rescue mission
Adamawa State camps coordinator, NEMA, Mallam Sa’ad Bello, said the explosion occurred around 10:50 am on Friday in one of the IDP tents adjacent to the camp’s food store.
Bello said he suspected that the explosion was caused by a female suicide bomber adding that the bomber may be among the 298 IDPs brought to the camp from Madagali or the 17 IDPs brought from Sambisa forest on Thursday.
He added that all the injured victims have been taken to Federal Medical Centre for treatment.
Representative of Red Cross Society on IDPs , Aliyu Maikano, said the bomb was planted by unknown persons in one of the tents where some of the IDPs were living inside the Malkoihi camp.
