Decries Increasing Rape, Violence Against Women

From Saka Bolaji, Minna

General Secretary, Campaign for Democracy (CD), Comrade Abdullahi Jabi, has condemned increasing cases of rape, sodomy and violence against women in parts of Niger state.
Speaking in an interview with journalists in Minna, Jabi said the new trend was disturbing adding that decisive action needed to be taken to curb it.
He expressed dismay over the reported case of a boy who died after series of abuse by a tea seller in Rijua area of the state, adding that “government should ensure adequate penalty for offenders.
He expressed dismay over the light sentence given to the convict who was involved in the act that resulted in the death of the boy adding that N30, 000 fine and few months in jail was too weak a sentence for such a serious offender.
He called on the Chief Judge of Niger state to investigate the judge who gave the verdict in the case adding that life sentence in jail would have been more appropriate in such cases.
His words: “It is ridiculous for a judge to give such a judgement in such matter. I am appealing to the Chief Judge of Niger state to sack the judge for judicial incompetence”.
He said that stiffer punishment was required in rape cases to serve as deterrent to criminally-minded individuals adding that courts should start implementing the Child Rights Act already domesticated in the state.
