The first round of the long awaited COPA-COCA-COLA National under 15 Schools Soccer Tournament, which began in Kaduna State on Monday, May 14, 2017 has ended.
The tournament, played at eight centers across the state, was on knockout basis.
Fielding questions from pressmen at Kagoro and Ugwan Rimi Bajju centers on Wednesday, the coordinator of the tournament in Kaduna state, Mr. Abel A. Yakubu, who is the Director, schools sports in the state, said all the eight centers will produce eight champions for the quarter finals to be played next week at a venue yet to be communicated to the public.
Mr. Abel Yakubu expressed gratitude to the Federal Government, the Kaduna State Government and Coca-Cola Company for partnership towards development of the sports at the grassroots.
The coordinator of the competition said the event will not only serve as physical fitness for the students, ages 13 to 15 years, but has enabled the identification of soccer talents that could be groomed to represent the state and the country in future engagements.
According to him, the information of players of the tournament has been fed into a national data bank which would check against age or name falsification.
Giving results of the Kagoro centre, he said Government College, Kagoro defeated GSS Kukum Daji by three goals to nil (3-0) to emerge winner, while at the Ungwan Rimi centre, GSS Ungwan Rimi peeped All Saints Secondary School Kafanchan by a lone goal (1-0), which was secured at extra-time, haven played one-one draw.
At the Finals of the first round between Government College KAgoro and GSS Ungwan Rimi, Government College was defeated by GSS Ungwan Rimi) by five goals to four at penalty kicks, haven played one-one draw and could not secure goals at extra time.
