Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have launched a voluntary teaching and sanitation exercise at the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps in Adamawa State.
Dozens of corps members participated in sweeping, cutting of grasses and general cleaning of the Damare camp and sensitized the inhabitants on environmental hygiene.
The State Coordinator of NYSC, Daniel Umaru, said the intervention was necessary to prevent spread of diseases in the densely populated camps.
“As you know IDPs camps are enlarging and the manpower is not there to do one or two things. The corps members are there giving helping hand to them in the area of health and sanitation and education,” he said
He said many corps members had been engaged as teachers for primary and secondary school pupils at various camps.
According to him, the NYSC headquarters had directed the state offices to partner with the National Emergency Management Agency in the areas of health, environmental sanitation and education.
IDPs interviewed at the camp expressed satisfaction with the assistance being provided by NYSC.
