Gombe state Governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for having the foresight for early commencement to reform the nation’s electoral system through the Committee on the Constitution and Electoral Reform currently undertaking a tour of the six geo-political zones of the country to hold public hearings.

The governor also revealed that the electoral reform would enhance a level playing field, reduce voter apathy, increase confidence in the process, raise voter turn-out from its low rate of 43.65 percent as estimated by the 2015 presidential elections) and translate into more credible elections that meets international standard.

A statement by Comrade Salihu Othman Isah, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, (SAN) said Dankwambo stated this at the North East public hearing on the constitution and electoral reform committee held in Gombe, Gombe state on Monday.

Isah, who also represented the AGF at the occasion, said the governor explained that the Federal Government in constituting the committee have ensured the nation is given ample time to comply with the international protocols binding member nations including Nigeria to complete the process of electoral reform at least six months prior to a general election.

Dankwambo therefore described the Constitution and Electoral Committee headed by former Senate President, Senator (Dr.) Ken Nnamani as an all important committee to aggregate the views and suggestions of “our people on how future elections could be improved.

Isah quoted the governor as saying that, “clearly this is an important Committee that is here to aggregate the views and suggestions of our people on how future elections could be improved.

“These Electoral reforms would enhance a level playing field, reduce voter apathy, increase confidence in the process, raise voter turn-out from its low rate of 43.65 percent (2015 Presidential elections) and translate into more credible elections that meets international standard.

“I commend the foresight of the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for the early commencement of the electoral reform. This shall give the nation ample time to comply with the international protocols binding member nations including ours, to complete the exercise at least six months prior to a general election.”

Dankwambo also commended “the patriotism of members of the Committee for undertaking this challenging but important assignment. I call on all our citizens to give them maximum support and cooperation, and to fully participate in this public hearing”, he concluded.

The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN in his speech delivered on his behalf by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Comrade Salihu Othman Isah explained that the AGF have assured that the outcome of the Committee would be implemented by the Federal Government.

He said President Muhammadu Buhari instituted the Committee as a result of his enthusiasm to foster a sustainable development of the nation through democratic means beginning with sound and robust electoral reform.

The Minister also assured of FG’s commitment and full support to ensure the Committee deliver its report in record time.

On his part, the chairman of the Committee, former Senate President, Ken Nnamani in his welcome address; assured Nigerians that his Committee would not be biased in its final reports.

He added that the public hearings that is holding across the six geo-political zone was to give Nigerians irrespective of their status and clime, an opportunity to contribute their ideas towards delivering an electoral reform that would be acceptable across board.
