In an effort to reduce importation of petroleum products into the country, the Delta state Government has entered into negotiations with Shinjin Petrochemicals Limited with a view to establishing a modular refinery in the state.
This was disclosed at the weekend when Mr. Paul Udofe, Director, Shinjin Petrochemicals Limited led the company’s management team to a meeting with Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in Government House, Asaba.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Mr. Udofe said that they were in Asaba to solicit the state government’s partnership especially on community relationship and cooperation to enable the company establish a modular refinery in koko, Warri North Local Government area.
He disclosed that the refinery, which would produce about 3.5million litres of petrol and 1.5million litres of diesel per day, would not only create about 10,000 direct and indirect jobs for Deltans but also attract more investors to the state .
“We are here to introduce our project to the state government, we have received a licence to establish a refinery in Delta State and we felt it wise to brief the governor of our intention to do the ground breaking ceremony in October and commission the plant within the next 15 months and also to seek the governor’s support for community relations purposes” he said.
Mr. Udofe added that they need the state’s chief executive to guide their company on the next step and what to do in the state to enhance the people’s cooperation on the refinery which will be located at Koko.
“This refinery will be one of the ways that the country can save a lot of foreign exchange because we are going to be producing and refining products locally so there won’t be need for importation,” he said.
He stated that the refinery would bring sustainable development to the host community and the state as part of the state government’s job and wealth creation agenda.
