According to Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, President Buhari conveyed his decision to take a 50 per cent cut to the office of the Secretary to government of the federation (SGF) through the permanent secretary of the State House, Mr. Nebolisa Emodi on Thursday.
The annual remuneration of the president of Nigeria as published by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission is N14, 058, 820.
In a statement, Shehu quoted Emodi as writing in a letter with reference number PRES/81/SGF/17: “I write to forward the completed IPPIS registration form of Mr. President and to draw your kind attention to Mr. President’s directive that only 50% of his salary be paid to him”.
Shehu said Osinbajo “has similarly given up half of his official remuneration.”
“Although the President will not force this on any one and it is not automatic, members of the President’s yet to be formed cabinet, especially ministers will be expected to make similar sacrifice of reduced salaries when they eventually come on board,” a Presidency source told The Dream Daily.
Following his inauguration on May 29, Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State announced a similar 50 per cent cut in his salary and that of his deputy.
Similarly, Kano State Governor, Umar Ganduje, announced a pay cut for all political office holders in the state after mounting the saddle of leadership.
