The federal government’s school feeding programme under which one meal is served to pupils a day is to kick off in Niger state on Monday next week
859,450 pupils in 3,000 public schools are to take part in the scheme.
Speaking at the commencement of a train-the-trainers programme for selected food vendors in Minna on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to the President on Empowerment and Social Intervention in the state, Mrs Afiniki Eunice Dauda said not less than N1.2bn would be spent on the project .
Mrs Dauda who spoke through the Programmes Manager Malam Attaihiru Musa Abubakar, said a total of 7,170 vendors had been selected after what he described as “vigorous screening”.
Mrs Dauda said a monitoring team made up of officials of Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs) in schools, School heads and councillors in each ward had been set up to ensure that the food vendors complied with laid rules and regulations.
She disclosed that each vendor would be entitled to a monthly allowance of N20,000 but disclosed that there would be no payment to them during school vacations and for any vendor that failed to live up to expectation.
The one-day training on food safety hygiene was designed to equip the 150 participants for the task ahead, she declared.
In the meantime the office of the vice president had approved the food roster for the state commencing with noodles and egg on Monday.
