Fire Guts INEC Office In Zamfara

The office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kauran Namoda Local Government, Zamfara State has been razed by fire.

The incident occurred on Monday, 2nd May, 2022, at about 11pm.

   A statement on Tuesday, 3rd May, 2022 which disclosed this was issued by National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voters Education, INEC, Barr Festus Okoye.

   Okoye said no casualties were reported in the incident and that the critical materials such as permanent voters cards, PVCs and equipment for continuous voters registration (CVR) store in a fire proof cabinets were saved as they were not touched by the fire.

  Resident Electoral Commissioner for Zamfara State, Prof. Sa’idu Babura Ahmed, reported the fire incident to INEC Headquarters, Abuja

  The INEC statement read in part: “The tragic incident occurred around 11.00pm on Monday 2nd May 2022. No casualties were reported while critical materials such Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) and registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise stored in fireproof cabinets were saved.

  “However, the building was extensively damaged. A number of fixed and movable office furniture were destroyed in spite of the best effort of the Zamfara State Fire Service and the spirited efforts of good Samaritans to contain the inferno.

“The attention of the Nigeria Police has been drawn to this incident. Together with the Fire Service, they have commenced investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire and advise the Commission for further action.”
