The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday, July 17 as Eid el-Fitri day, to signify the end to this year’s Ramadan fast.
With the pronouncement, Friday is now the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal 1436 AH.
Muslims in the country will thus join their counterparts around the world in festivities to mark the end of Ramadan, a month of self-deprivation and spiritual rejuvenation.
As Islamic prerequisite to making the announcement, Sultan Abubakar said the new moon of Shawwal was sighted in 10 states of the federation, namely Kano, Borno, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Nasarawa Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi and Kebbi, by various Muslim leaders and organisations, which was duly verified and authenticated by the National Moon Sighting Committee and that of the Sultanate Council.
“Consequent upon this, tomorrow Friday, 17th day of July becomes the first day of Shawwal 1436 AH.and the day of the Eid el Fitr,” Sultan Abubakar said.
The Sultan urged all Muslims to pray for the peace and unity of Nigeria and to continue to live in harmony with all, regardless of their religious inclination.
