Ghana’s Cabinet has given approval for the establishment of a University of Sports Development at the facilities of the 13th Africa Games, less than 48 hours after a Nigerian Professor of Sports Psychology, Oluwaseun Olarenwaju Omotayo, called on the Ghanaian Government to do so in his Exaugural Lecture delivered on Thursday 25 July, 2024 at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho Volta Region, Ghana.

In the same Exaugural Lecture, Prof. Omotayo called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a Federal University of Sports in Nigeria.

According to Ghanaian media reports, “the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) says it has received cabinet approval to convert the Borteyman Sports Complex facility into a University of Sports for Development.”

The Borteyman Sports Complex was built to host the 2024 Africa Games in Accra, earlier this year.

In his Exaugural Lecture, Prof. Omotayo had urged the Ghanaian Government to establish a university of sports using the Borteyman Sports Complex as the foundational facility and campus of the university, saying this would, among others, ensure that the sports complex is maximally utilised and not fall into decay.

In the same Exaugural Lecture attended by Ghanaian Government officials and other dignitaries from the country, Africa and the UK, Prof. Omotayo called on President Tinubu to establish Nigeria’s first Federal University of Sports, which can start operations using the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos and the likes, so that these stadia do not fall into perennial disuse, and in order to tap into the trillion-dollar global sports economy by accelerating the development of sporting talents in Nigeria for nation-building purposes.
