Social Action, an Abuja-based social change mobilising organisation, has stated that succumbing to the European Union’s (EU) pressure for the endorsement of Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) will be counterproductive.
This warning was issued during a stakeholders Roundtable on Monday in Abuja. According to the president of National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) Mr Ken Ukoha, “the letters and spirit of the supposed Agreement is hypocritical and inimical to the interest of Nigeria and West Africa in general”. He explained that the speed and secrecy that followed the signing of similar Agreement in Ghana gives serious cause for concern.
In her address, Vivian Bellonwu-Okafor of Social Action called on all well-meaning Nigerians to raise a “red flag” on the issue; calling it a monumental economic slavery. In her remarks, she mentioned that signing such Agreement woul not only spell doom for the country’s industrialization efforts, but will also foist far-reaching environmental sabotage on Nigeria.
