From Tom Garba, Yola
The Owner-Manager of Homtel Hotel, Yola Adamawa State where the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Umar Zanna Mustapha, passed on at the weekend has narrated how the incident occurred.
Mr Umar Falli told The Dream Daily that Zannah landed in Yola at about 8.30am on Friday via an Arik Air flight from Abuja and headed straight for Homtel Hotel, along army Barracks road.
Falli said Zanna, who was in the town to represent the Borno governor at the 18th,19th and20th convocation ceremonies of Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH) Yola, was a long-time patron of Homtel Hotel. He added that the late deputy governor also planned to visit the Borno state internally displaced persons (IDPs) taken refuge in various camps in Yola.
According Umar Falli the deputy governor’s aides barricaded the corridor of the floor where Zanna was lodged and the entire entourage had a good time with Zanna up till 11.30pm when the deputy governor retired to bed, showing no signs of sickness.
Falli said he was promptly at the scene when Zanna’s security aides raised the alarm that they could not wake up their principal on Saturday morning after calling him on the phone and knocking the door several times.
The hotel manager said: “The only thing I discovered when I got to his room were drugs related to high blood pressure treatment and a device believe used for testing blood pressure. I saw him dead with blood sipping out of his mouth. He seems to have struggled with heart issues as even the government of Borno state issued a press statement to the actually cause of his death.
“No food was given to him by my hotel staff, as the deputy governor’s brothers and his closest aides provide his food and all that he needs. I am surprise with the kind of stories making the round in town relating his dead to many difference issues. All I know is that this man died in my hotel, no food of whatever type was served to him by my staff and being my friend I can categorically tell you that he has heart-related sickness as the doctors told me while examining him. I know that Zanna had almost the same problem in 2007 and 2010 and he survived it on those two occasions, so people should stop making unjustifiable stories over the man’s death.”
