National Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof, Mahmood Yakubu, has said that the successes of the electoral body under his watch were largely dependent on the commission’s integrity as good elections manager.
Prof. Yakubu stated this while welcoming into the INEC fold six newly sworn-in National Electoral Commissioners at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
He urged the new commissioners to settle down promptly and discharge their duties in strict compliance with the law.
His words: “We must be strict in the application of law, firm in handling the public trust bestowed on us and fair in our dealings with political parties, candidates and other stakeholders and Nigerian.
“We must continue to defend the choice made by Nigerians at the polls by protecting the sanctity of the vote without which the value of democratic election is diminished.
Responding on behalf of the new appointees, Maj.-Gen. Modibbo Abubakar Alkali (rtd) acknowledge their responsibility and said their task was to support the INEC chairman to develop an election management body that would be the pride of Nigeria.
