Managing Director/CEO of Kaduna Electric, the operator of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Engr. Garba Haruna has stressed the importance of full compliance with industry standard operations procedures and safety measures in order to ensure accident-free working environment.
Haruna made the call through a memo sent to all heads of departments, stations’ managers and units’ supervisors.
The Head of Corporate Communication of the Company, Abdulaziz Abdullahi in statement issued in Kaduna stated that “the Company shall continue to keep the staff abreast with all safety requirements and enhance the Company’s safety compliance level with NERC regulations”.
He quoted the Managing Director as directing all staff of Kaduna Electric “to always ensure full compliance with standard operations procedures and necessary safety measures before, during and after all operations as any violation shall be visited with appropriate sanction”.
According to Engr. Garba, “the Management attaches high premium to the safety of the lives of its workers and the general public and shall not hesitate to apply the necessary sanction on any staff found to be deviating”.
He also appealed to” the general public to desist from erecting structures under power lines to avoid unnecessary accident”. Besides the manifest danger of electrocution, “these high voltage power lines emit electro-magnetic pulse that constitute serious health hazard to those that engages in the practice”, he further contended.
The Acting Head, Health, Safety and Environment of the Company, Mr. John Adamu revealed that the intensive enlightenment programmes embarked upon this year by the Company has yielded positive result as the accident rate has dropped drastically to five compared to the 13 cases recorded during the same period last year.
It will be recalled, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has last week threatened to sanction some Electricity distribution Companies for failing to meet the basic safety standard.
Mr. Abdulaziz Abdullahi disclosed that Kaduna Electric was not among Companies to be sanctioned as “its safety performance is far above average.”
