The Kaduna State Government has disclosed that it was set to plant 10 million trees as part of measures to stem desert encroachment and erosion.
Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Manzo Daniel Maigari, disclosed this during an advocacy visit to some surrounding Communities of Nimbia Forest plantation in Jema’a and Sanga Local Government Areas.
Maigari said the state government consider it necessary to safeguard the environment against hazards of global warming, shortage of rain fall soil erosion, destruction of herbs and species of birds and animals, among others.
He lamented the indiscriminate exploitation of plantation and forest reserves adding that the State Government will be constituting Community Forest Management Committees at wards and Local Government levels as measures to check the menace, engage youth and women in tree planting, in line with the State Government, policy to hand over forest management to Local Government Councils.
The Commissioner said arrangement has been concluded to provide a permanent policy camp (Operation Yaki) at Nimbia to also check cases of armed robbery, theft that have bedevilled the area, especially commuters in recent past.
In their separate responses, the Chiefs of Godogodo, Malam Iliya Ajiya Antang and the representative of Etum Numana and district Head of Gwantu Alh. Bashir Mohammed lauded the efforts of the state government towards saving the plantation and forest reserves.
They assured Government of support and cooperation of their communities for the attainment of set goals and objectives.
Earlier in a welcome address, the Forest Project Manager, Mr. Alhamdu Ali Akawu urged the communities to contribute their quota to save guarding the plantation as government was poised at securing them for the benefit of all.
The occasion was attended by traditional rulers, Ardos, Security Agents, vice chairmen of Local Government, Dr. Abdul Kadir Kassim, Permanent Secretary and Alh. Dahiru Abdull PRO, Ministry of Agricture and National Resources among others.
