Nemesis of Africa

Africa 4

By Benedict Ahanonu

Dear Africans,
What is wrong with us?
Why are we renowned for wrong deeds?
Why do we love wickedness?
Why do we hate ourselves?
We’ve sold our birthright like Esau,
Opting for lesser glory
Why Freetown and Monrovia?
Because we dealt on us as slaves
Today we keep dealing on ourselves
They assaulted us, lampooned us
In bed and field
But at hour eleven,
We got disillusioned…
Some call it independence
But is that true?
Is Africa independent?

Today we cry out of penury,
Our wickedness still holds
Reason oil is curse to Nigeria
We project deceit and mischief
Look at armed robbery, look at drug trafficking
Currency trafficking, human trafficking, smuggling,
Petrol hoarding, witchcraft, sabotage, killings
Look at corruption, nepotism, mismanagement,
What of indiscipline and stolen funds?
Hidden in coded Swiss bank accounts
And they laugh at us as we arrive
They say monkeys are here again
With stolen public funds
We make mockery of ourselves
Look at fraud, avarice, tribalism, mediocrity,
Look at civil war in South Sudan, tension in Burundi
Disintegration in Libya
Misrule in Zimbabwe, dictatorship in Uganda,
Somalia is torn with remnants in Kenya
Confusion in Ethiopia, trouble in Nigeria with bombs exploding
Bloodletting in endless conflicts, life wasted every day by day
Which way Africa?
