The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated its commitment to conducting the best credible elections in the history of the country this year.

Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated this at a crucial meeting with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, held at the CBN auditorium in Abuja on Tuesday 7 February, 2023.

Mahmood said the meeting was part of his efforts to partner with all necessary national institutions to enable the commission deliver the best election in the country since it cannot achieve the feat alone.

He called on every Nigerian to commit to this serious national assignment to ensure leaders were elected under a peaceful and secure credible poll.

Mahmood said: “It is my desire to conduct the best election ever in the history of the country. But I cannot do it alone and that is why we are here as a commission to ask for the Central Bank support, especially the current situation in the country concerning naira redesign issues. It is our hope that the Central Bank governor and his team will help the commission as it has been doing in the past.

Responding, Emefiele thanked the INEC chairman and his entourage and promised to give INEC the needed support as requested by the commission.

Emefiele said: “Even before you made these requests known to me, I had accepted them already. Even today the CBN had granted your earliest request on forex for the commission to import materials for the election. I want to announce to you that the CBN is in custody of these materials already.

“Election is a serious national assignment and I would not like Nigerians to blame the Central Bank for not supporting INEC on the success of the 2023 general election. The CBN has been supportive of INEC even before I became the CBN governor and I cannot do otherwise.”

The INEC chairman was accompanied by some national commissioners of the commission, INEC Directors, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC National Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, and members of INEC Press Corps, photo sections of whom are below.
