Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Bem Angwe, has restated the commission’s resolve to remain steadfast in the discharge of its statutory responsibilities of human rights promotion, protection and enforcement in Nigeria.
Prof. Angwe stated this in Abuja at a press brief to announce the re- accreditation of the Commission to “A” status by the International Coordinating Body of the National Human Rights Institutions under the United Nations system.
Nigeria was downgraded by the International Coordinating Committee in 2007 after it failed to comply with the Paris Principles and the ICC accreditation standard as a result of political interference in the affairs of the Commission as well as increasing cases of human rights abuses resulting from insurgency and counter insurgency activities, which put the country on the watch radar of the entire global community.
While congratulating President Muhammadu Buhari and Nigerians on the feat, Prof. Angwe disclosed that the Commission has crossed the one million threshold in its complaints status. He further enjoined Nigerians to endeavour to report cases of human rights abuses whenever they fall victim.
