Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has decried the rate of pipeline vandalism in the state, saying it had turns the state into an economic mess.
Governor Okowa stated this during the commissioning of the Extension of Access road at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba.
According to the governor, “we are deeply gotten into economic mess. Our oil pipelines have been vandalised. The allocation we received is no longer what it used to be and we trying to fall back to our IGR (internally generated revenue) yet we couldn’t because of the economic situation facing the people.”
He urged the management of the FMC to continue do their best in delivery good healthcare service to Deltans.
Acting Managing Director, FMC Asaba, Dr. Victor Oseiatumeh, expressed gratitude to Governor Okowa for his continue intervention in the hospital in terms of projects, which he said started when Okowa was commissioner for health and continued when he was senator and now as a governor.
He explained that erosion was affecting some of the hospital’s buildings, a situation aggravated by poor drainage system, adding that the menace might be worsened in no distance time if urgent steps were not taken with a view to providing measures that would divert the flood waters elsewhere.
His words: “We are currently faced with gully erosion problem in this hospital. We are afraid it might destroy our buildings if urgent steps are not taken to save the hospital. We are appealing to the state and federal government to come to our aid.
When The Dream Daily visited the site, the pathetic erosion menace had destroyed the fence of the hospital, leaving staffers in continued fear of the unknown.
While the ravaging erosion menace had also unsettled residents of Awai/ Nnebisi road quarters, Dr. Oseiatumeh said that the age-long erosion problem had been source of concern to staffers of the hospital, especially during raining season.
The Dream Daily investigation revealed that the gully erosion menace affecting some of the buildings within the Orthopaedic Department of the hospital puts admitted patients in a palpable fear while the exit road has become impassable.
