The Niger state Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, has directed the immediate upgrading of some of the dilapidated facilities at the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) temporary orientation camp in Minna, the state capital.
The governor gave the directive in Minna at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Batch ‘A’ pre-mobilization workshop currently going on in Minna.
Governor Bello, who described the condition of the facilities at the camp as unacceptable, said the corp members and the staff hostels be upgraded immediately before the commencement of the next orientation exercise.
He also approved the provision of a borehole in the camp to ease water scarcity, adding that “the state ministry for youths and sports development must ensure the speedy execution of the projects”.
The governor also disclosed that further construction work at the permanent orientation camp has been captured in the 2017 budget and work will commence before the end of this year.
He also directed that the payment of the state monthly allowance to corp members serving in the state which was stopped by the immediate past administration be commenced so as to enhance their welfare.
He therefore commended the management of the NYSC for the various innovations introduced to the service, stressing that “the scheme has continue to give our youths a pride of place through the various initiatives which correspond with the expectations and demand of time to make them independent after the one-year mandatory service”.
Director-General of the NYSC, Brig-Gen. Sule Zakare Kazaure informed the governor that the mobilization workshop is a regular platform for bringing together all the critical stakeholders in the mobilization process to appraise previous mobilization activities with a view to fashioning out ways of improving on the next.
In her remark, the state coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Theresa Ibukun Arokoyo, commended the visionary leadership of the Director-General which has put the scheme on a steady course of qualitative change towards the much desired level of global best practices in term of service delivery and effective performances.
