The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed circulating rumours regarding the resumption of voter registration in Nigeria, urging the public to ignore what it described as a “false narrative.”

In a statement released on Tuesday, 4 March, 2025, in Abuja, the commission clarified that no official date has been set for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise or the replacement of lost Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), contrary to speculations suggesting a resumption on 27 May, 2025.

The clarification came via a statement from Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC National Chairman. Oyekanmi emphasized that the commission’s attention had been drawn to a misleading report making the rounds, which falsely claimed INEC had scheduled the voter registration process to recommence in late May.

“The report is untrue,” Oyekanmi stated. “The Commission has not announced any resumption date for the CVR. We appeal to the public to disregard the false narrative.”

The statement has put to rest growing speculation among Nigerians eager to participate in upcoming electoral processes, many of whom have been awaiting updates on voter registration timelines.

The CVR, a critical exercise that allows eligible citizens to register as voters or update their details, has been a subject of public interest, particularly as the nation prepares for future elections. Similarly, the replacement of lost PVCs remains a pressing concern for voters who need to secure their voting rights.

INEC’s swift response underscores its commitment to tackling misinformation that could confuse or mislead the electorate. The commission has not provided further details on when the CVR might resume but assured the public that any official announcement would be communicated through its verified channels.

For now, Nigerians are urged to remain patient and rely only on credible sources for updates on electoral activities.
