The Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) Bauchi State Chapter has hailed the appointment of one of them as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in the state, just as they lauded the ongoing verification exercise of retired workers in the country.
Chairman of the State Chapter of NUP, Engineer Abu Gar, made the commendation when they paid a courtesy call at the weekend on the new SSG Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman, who was appointed recently by the state Governor Mohammed Abubakr.
According to Gar, over 20,000 thousand members of the union commended the governor for appointing one of them as SSG who knows the plight of pensioners in the state.
He said: ” Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman is a seasoned administrator and a technocrat. We want to tell the governor that he made a good choice. The governor must be commended for bringing somebody with such track record and understanding of administration to block the leakages in the entire civil service of the state.”
Also speaking, Vice Chairman of the North Nast Region of the NUP, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Ahmed, lauded the governor over the appointment and urged other governors to take a cue from the Bauchi State governor. According to him the appointment of pensioner will give sense of belonging to retirees and hope of better life in the state.
They two NUP leaders appealed to the state government to look into the backlog of gratuities and work out modalities of settling the retirees’ benefits as they affect members’ livelihood.
The leadership of the Union also described the ongoing verification of the pensioners as the best organized exercise in the past 24 years.
In his response, Suleiman assured the pensioners that government will do everything within it capacity to see that retirees enjoy all their benefits, saying “every civil servant is a potential pensioner. Therefore, no experience civil servants will neglect the plight of pensioners.”
He enjoined the pensioners to be patient and pray for the government to succeed, assuring that the government has a lot for the citizens in the state.
