We Are Innocent, Insist Suspects
From Ochei Matthew, Asaba
It was harvest of suspected criminals as the Delta Police Command paraded no fewer than 175 persons arrested over alleged involvement in various crimes across the state.
The suspects were apprehended for various offences including kidnapping, armed robbery, rape and defilement, fraud, car snatching, murder, cultism and vandalism.
Armed robbery had the lion share of 69 suspects, with cultism and kidnapping trailing from behind, according to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim who paraded the suspects at the command’s headquarters
Mr. Ibrahim decried the high rate of cultism in the state, vowing that the police will not rest on their oars to reduce crime to the barest minimum.
“Cultism is one of the issues we have in the state. It has extended from higher institutions of learning to secondary schools, unions and the communities,” Ibrahim said
He added that through intelligence, the paraded cultists who are members of various secret cults including Arobaga, Aiye and others were round up at Ashaka, Warri and Kwale.
However, the suspects who spoke at a separate interview at the police headquarters on Thursday in Asaba lamented the incessant arrest of innocent people by the policemen in Delta in name of ‘police are working’.
One of them said “We don’t have faith in Nigeria Police again. They will leave the real criminals and cultists and keep arresting innocent people from the street to add up their numbers so as to look as if they are working.
“Most of us were just arrested on our way going home or work without even knowing what we do rather accusing us with one crime or the other. Anybody they see on the street is a cultist in the eye of police.
