The Adamawa state Government has concluded plans to introduce Pay-Direct system of revenue mobilization and ensure prompt remittance of Pay-As-You Earn (PAYE) by federal ministries and parastatals present in the state.
Finance Commissioner in the state, Yunusa Mahmud, who made this disclosure while speaking to newsmen over the weekend maintained that the effort was geared towards boosting internally-generated revenue and block leakages in the system.
According to him, “if the new policy is properly implemented, the state government will within two years be able to pay salaries and running costs of its workforce and channel federal allocation to capital projects in the state.
Mahmud disclosed that Mubi town which is the commercial nerve centre of the state generates less than N2 million in the last one year. He expressed hope that, when the new system is implemented, revenue projection from Mubi is expected to rise to N10 million monthly.
He however advised government at all levels, to block the economy in recession at present from going down to depression level, identifying over-dependence on one source of revenue generation by the past administrations as one of the factors responsible for dwindling economy.
” During past administrations, the state used to get excess crude allocation up to N10 billion from the federal government ,but what we are getting now is less than N2 billion,” Mahmud stated.
“What we are doing to mitigate these challenges is to ensure all federal ministries and parastatals present in the state remit their Pay As You Earn (PAYE) as at when due to the coffers of the state government we are doing our best to see what is due for government, get to government,” he added.
The commissioner applauded the efforts of the state government in hiring the services of consultant to revive the revenue drive of the state.
He therefore charged the people of the state to pay their taxes and levies to enable government provide adequate social amenities to them.
