From Saka Bolaji, Minna
Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, has frowned at the increasing rate of unlicensed motorcycles and flagrant violation of traffic rules by motorcyclists on highways in the state.
Sani Bello expressed his displeasure in Minna during a visit to the Niger State Sector Command headquarters of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) where he found a horde of impounded motorcycles mostly for lack of number plates and for committing other traffic=related offences.
Irked by this development, the governor warned all motorcyclists in the state to ensure proper registration of their motorcycles, stressing that government will not tolerate unregistered motorcycles on our highways.
Addressing culprits, the governor was very emphatic: “I have been told by the Sector Commander that many of your motorcycles are without number plates or properly registered. I also learnt that many of you are without helmet.
“These acts will not be tolerated any longer. You all know what you have done is wrong. It is against the law. Everyone of you should go get your number plates and ensure proper documentation of your motorcycles. It is for your own good that you do what is right,” the governor counselled the apprehended motorcyclists.
The governor then pleaded with the Road Safety officials to pardon the apprehended motorcyclists. “I want to plead for leniency for these ones in the spirit of the Ramadan season but with a warning that all of them will go and perfect their papers and sin no more”.
The Corps’ Sector Commander Susan Ada Ajenge, complained to the governor of the increasing number of motorcycles on the roads of major cities and towns in the state.
She lamented that most of the motorcyclists in the state endanger their lives by not wearing the protective head gear, hence the arrest of defaulters after several appeals and enlightenment programmes by her sector.
