Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has described the retention of the National Hockey Federation (NHF) National Super League trophy by Niger Flickers as a sign of resurgence of the sports sector in the state.
Sani Bello, in a congratulatory message to the club signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Jibrin Baba Ndace, commended the superlative performance of the team in the one-week long league.
The governor urged the boys to keep up the fighting spirit, promising that government has plans to revamp the sports sector through the upgrade of its facilities.
He congratulated and commended the players and officials of the club for making the state proud, maintaining that better days lie ahead for athletes in the state.
He expressed delight that the Flickers have again qualified to fly the flag of the country in the next edition of the African Hockey Championship in Zimbabwe, much is expected of the team.
The governor urged the team to improve on its continental performance at this year’s meeting. Flickers finished 3rd in last edition of the continental championship.
His words: “You have proven that the retention of your position as the national champion was not a fluke. I want to charge you to go further and conquer Africa. I know you can do it and I am convinced you will do it.
“Let you preparations be geared towards the Africa Hockey Championship to be hosted by Zimbabwe. We shall within our resources support the club in the continental campaign”.
