Senate President Bukola Saraki on Monday made an unofficial inspection of the Minna International Airport on his way to Abuja following the six-week closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Sources close to the Senate President said that the decision to inspect Minna Airport was informed by the pressure of the Niger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello for the use of the facility, being the closest to the closed Abuja Airport.
It was also gathered that the Senate President was in Minna to enable him have on the spot assessment of the level of efforts made by Niger State government in her bid to see the Minna Airport, which has one of the best runaway in the country is put to use.
Senator Saraki flew to Minna from Lagos in an official aircraft with registration number 5N FGS at about 1:05pm local time and was received at the airport by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Mikail Al-Amin Bmitosahi who briefed him on efforts made so far by the state government.
He was shown the renovation work being done by the state government at the airport, which include, the lounge, arrival and departure hall of the airport.
The Senate President was also briefed on the efforts at rehabilitating the federal government-owned Minna-Suleja Road for easy movement of travellers to the nation’s capital city of Abuja from the airport.
Impressed by the brief he received from Chief of Staff, the Senate President promised that the National Assembly will see to the request of the Niger State government.
Saraki then left the airport for Abuja at about 1:18 pm in a convoy through the 98 kilometre Minna-Suleja Road to have on the spot assessment of work done by the state government on the Trunk A Road.
It will be recalled that Governor Sani Bello led the state political leaders to the National Assembly recently soliciting that the Minna Airport be used as alternative to the Abuja airport while the repairs is being carried on the latter.
