A planned demonstration by primary school teachers in Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State over nonpayment of salaries was foiled on Tuesday by heavy presence of security personnel.
Over 470 teachers’ with salaries ranging from four to seven months are yet to be paid, their spokesman, Joseph Augustine, lamented while speaking with pressmen.
Augustine said the refusal of Jema’a Local Government Council to pay the affected teachers’ salaries has exposed them to untold hardship and demanded explanations from the Council.
When contacted, chairman, Interim Management Council Jema’a Local Government, Dr. Bege Katuka, explained that the development was not deliberate but a case of omission and efforts were being made to effect payment without delay.
However, policemen were seen in six Hilux pickup vans keeping vigil over the secretariat of the local government as proactive measures against any protest from the affected primary school teachers
