By Our Reporters

The perilous state of affairs in the country was, again, trust on the front burner on Tuesday, 5 July, 2022 as audacious terrorists threw cation into the wind and attacked a convoy of presidential advance team dispatched from Abuja to Daura, Katsina State to await the arrival of President Muhammadu Buhari in his hometown for the upcoming Sallah festivities.

Also, another set of terrorists staged a blistering attack on a section of the Kuje Correctional Facility in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, reportedly freeing a yet-to-be ascertained number of inmates there.

And on the same day, terrorists in an ambush killed the Police Area Commander in Dutsinma, Kastina State, Aminu Umar, alongside another policeman.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, confirmed the attack on the presidential convoy via a statement.

Malam Shehu wrote:

“The Presidency has described as sad and unwelcome, the shooting incident near Dutsinma, Katsina State, at the convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of security guards, protocol and media officers ahead of the President, Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to Daura for Sallah.

“The attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military, police and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy.

“Two persons in the convoy are receiving treatment for the minor injuries they suffered. All the other personnel, staff and vehicles made it safely to Daura.”

In another statement, Spokesman of the Katsina State Police Command, Gambo Isah, disclosed how the police area commaner Aminu Umar was murdered.

Isah wrote: “Today (Tuesday), July 5, 2022 at about 11.30am, a distress call was received that terrorists numbering over 300, on motorcycles, shooting sporadically with AK-47 rifles and General Purpose Machine Guns, ambushed ACP Aminu Umar, Area Commander, Dutsinma and team, while on clearance operation of recalcitrant bandits/terrorists, in Zakka Forest, Safana Local Government Area of Katsina state.

“Consequently, the Area Commander and one other gallantly lost their lives during a cross exchange of gun fire.

“The Commissioner of Police, Idrisu Dauda, on behalf of the officers and men of the command, expresses his deep sympathy to the family of the deceased and pray to almighty Allah to repose their souls in Jannatul Firdausi.”

And The Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed the attack on its Kuje facility.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Umar Abubakar, on Wednesday 6 July, 2022, the Service stated:

“I wish to confirm that at about 2200hrs, some yet-to-be-identified gunmen attacked the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory.

“However, men of the Armed Squad of the Nigerian Correctional Service and other security agencies attached to the Custodial Centre have responded and calm has been restored to the facility and the situation is under control.

“Other details will be made available soon.”

In a reaction to the presidential convoy attack, a security expert who pleaded anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the development lamented that “the President has treated the issue of insecurity with kid’s gloves for far too long in my view. Like other Nigerians, I hope we are not going to be consumed, all of us, including the President. What more can I say. If these terrorists can attack the presidential convoy, what is left? Who is safe? The audacity is there. They are saying ‘look we mean business and even your president we can go after him’. This sends a very bad signals to Nigerians that they are not safe, and that even the President is vulnerable. That is bad! God help Nigeria!”
