The Sokoto state government has declared support for the measles and rubella vaccine, even as it urged health workers, religious and traditional leaders to educate the masses on the importance.
Speaking during the flag-off of the Measles and Rubella vacvine Sensitization campaign at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Lodge, Sokoto, Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, represented by his deputy, Idris Mohammed Gobir, said Measles and Rubella are highly contagious diseases capable of causing deafness, blindness, heart defects, brain damage and even death in children.
While noting that vaccines provide safe and effective protection against such contagious diseases, the governor assured of government’s continued investment in immunisation programmes and enhance access to essential healthcare services.
The governor, who thanked Development Partners for their support to healthcare services in Sokoto, also reassured that his government remained dedicated to delivering good governance to the people of the state.
In her remarks, the state’s First Lady, Dr Fatima Ahmed Aliyu, urged wives of local government chairmen to ensure the spread of measles and rubella vaccine sensitisation programme in their respective areas.
This, according to the first lady, is to ensure all eligible children receive the vaccines and get immunized against other child killer diseases as well.
Dr Fatima Aliyu, who stressed that ensuring a healthy future for all children is a collective responsibility, added that children can only be leaders of tommorow when they are alive and in good health.
In his welcome address, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, thanked the State Government and Development Partners for their consistent support to the Ministry.
These support, he said, has enabled the ministry to achieve success in many of its activities.
A statement by the spokesperson to the deputy governor stated that the highlight of the occasion was the signing of an agreement letter between the State Government and the North -West Zonal coordinator of C-Wins.
