Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, on Monday, inaugurated state monitoring committee and local government coordinators to ensure the unhindered sales of its 55 percent discounted grains and other foodstuff.

Addressing the appointees at the Government Chamber, the governor disclosed that they were appointed on merit and testament to their integrity.

“”Sustenance of this initiative requires an organized credible and reliable structure to fast-track the implementation. It was on this premise that the State Government appointed a State Monitoring Committee and Local Government Co-ordinators to ensure effective and efficient distribution and sales of the food items and other essential commodities to the people across the 23 Local Government Areas of the State””.

While urging the  committee to deal deligently and uprightly in the discharge of the responsibility, the governor admitted that Nigeria is going through difficult times.

“”As we are all aware, since inception of the present political dispensation, a number of economic upsets were witnessed nationally and internationally owing to the changing pattern of global economic indices and contraction of fortunes of the global finances.

“”However, certain National Reform Policies initiated by the Federal Government to redirect economic and social fortunes of the country for future growth and development could not pacify the situation in the country. Policies such as removal of fuel subsidy, electricity tariffs and others, subjected our people into varying economic hardships and numerous tests of livelihood””, the governor noted.

Continuing, he said both the federal and state governments have initiated a number of palliatives to help cushion the effect of the economic crisis, hence the decision to employ additional approach to alleviate the suffering of the people.

“”In this new approach, the State Government procured food items and other essentials commodities meant to be sold at 55% discounted rate to enable families access the commodities for the wellbeing of their members. The State Government is committed to sustaining the supply of the commodities to all the 244 wards in the State with guaranteed access to all families irrespective of any social differences and/or political affiliations.

“”I would like to assure all that the initiative will be sustained until when the economic situation improved in the country””, Sokoto governor assured.

Responding on behalf of the committee, their charman, Chiso Abdullahi Dantijo, said the gesture was a worthy initiative for the well-being of the people of the state.

He also assured that they would work deligently and with fear of God to deliver creditably.

“”Your excellency, you have given us a free hand to operate and we are also using this occasion to also appeal to the people of the state to also give us such free hands and the needed cooperation,” Dantijo said.
