Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has said that his administration would partner the Sultanate Council on ending the menace of street begging in the state.
Governor Ahmed, who gave the assurance when he received the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar on a Sallah homage, disclosed that “new strategies would be mapped out to curb the menace of street begging especially in Sokoto metropolis.
“We would also ensure that we take data of all those roaming our streets begging so as to know where each and every beggar comes from.
“Part of the strategies we are adopting is to enroll them into Almajiri integrated schools located in Shuni and Wamakko local government areas ” he said.
Continuing on the new strategy, the governor said it would include the provision of accomadation, feeding and other necessities for boarding students in order to make them stay in school.
While calling on the people of the state to support this move by the state government and the Sultanate Council towards changing the existing, old tradition which contradicts the teaching of Islam, the governor reassured of his administration’s determination to uplift the living standard of the people irrespective of their backgrounds.
He therefore solicited for support from parents and guardians in achieving the set target.
Meanwhile, in view of his numerous contributions to human capital development especially in the education sector, the Sokoto state chapter of All Nigerian Conference of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPPS) has conferred the award of Best Performing Governor on Governo Aliyu.
Making this known when ANCOPPS delegation paid Salah homage on the governor, the State chairman of the association, Comrade Muhammed Ikililu, said the governor’s outstanding performance in the education sector especially the approval of N200,000 monthly maintenance stipend to principal’s of all the schools in the state stood him out amongst his peers, hence the resolve to so honour him.
According to Ikililu, some of the tangible achievements which qualified the governor for the award include the renovation of many primary and secondary schools across the state in less than two years.
