The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has quarantined tones of sub-standard iron rods in a bid to rid Nigeria of building collapse cases.
Mr. Dauda Yakubu, the North East Regional Coordinator of the organization, confirmed the development shortly after carried out “Operation Free Nigeria “out of sub-standard iron rods and other building materials in Yola on Thursday.
Yakubu said that the exercise was to stop issues of using sub-standard iron rods following the rampart cases of building collapses being experienced across the country.
“Today, the Standard Organization of Nigeria is conducting national exercise on iron rods sub-standard. The exercise is aimed at ridding Nigeria of incessant cases of building collapses. During the raid, a considerable tonnes of iron rods was quarantined in Yola.” Yakubu said.
According to the regional coordinator, during the exercise SON uncovered sharp practices in the iron rods industries especially in the area of the thickness of the iron rod.
He explained that among the sharp practices uncovered was on top of the iron rod “written 2.5 Millimetre but after measurement we discovered it is 2.1 millimetre.”
He said that samples of the iron rods were collected and would be sent to the SON Enugu engineering laboratory for mechanical and chemical test for final ruling.
He said that anybody or company found involved in sharp practice would be charged accordingly.
He advised the public to always ensure that the right quality and satisfied iron rods were used in building projects
