Palpable grief currently hangs over Okerimi-Oro community in Irepodun Local Government area of Kwara State following the tragic deaths of three secondary school boys who drowned inside a well in the community at the weekend.

The Dream Daily learnt that the three pupils, aged 14 and 15 were students of Ayaki Secondary school located in the area.

The tragedy started to unfold when one of the three had tried to fetch water
from the well to perform ablution last Friday but then he slipped and fell inside the well.

“Instead of alerting adults around to rescue his drowning mate, the second boy tried to descend into the well to do the rescue but also fell inside. The third boy too wanted to rescue his friend by entering the well but he also drowned, throwing the entire community into
mourning mood since the weekend”, a member of the community said.

According to the member of the community, a supernatural twist was introduced to the incident as the leaves thrown inside the well as part of rituals got dried. The well also dried up after the boys’ remains were taken out.

Efforts to speak with parents of the deceased proved abortive as they decline to talk with journalists. Relations of the deceased described the incident “an act of God,” adding that the victims were “agile and promising boys who were also respectful to elders.”
