In a display of tone-deaf arrogance, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and a coterie of other officials are packing their bags for London to “showcase” President Bola Tinubu’s so-called achievements at an international press conference.
This ostentatious junket, slated for June 27, 2025, is an insult to millions of Nigerians grappling with economic hardship, soaring inflation, and a government that seems more interested in self-congratulation than addressing their plight. At a time when the nation teeters on the edge of despair, this lavish trip reeks of misplaced priorities and a callous disregard for the suffering masses.
Let’s be clear: Nigeria is in crisis. Since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, his economic reforms — chiefly the removal of fuel subsidies and the naira’s devaluation — have plunged the country into chaos. Inflation has skyrocketed past 30%, food and fuel prices have soared, and the cost-of-living crisis has pushed millions into poverty. Protests have erupted, with citizens decrying policies widely criticized as “anti-people.” Just months ago, a Lagos-based NYSC member faced threats for daring to voice her frustration over inflation, while Eedris Abdulkareem’s song slamming Tinubu’s empty promises was banned. This is the reality on the ground — hunger, insecurity, and stifled dissent. Yet, Wike, Umahi, and their ilk believe the solution is a transatlantic PR stunt to polish Tinubu’s tarnished image.
The audacity of this London escapade is staggering. While Nigerians lament unaffordable fuel, these ministers will jet off to the UK, likely in first-class comfort, to tout “legacy projects” and a “verifiable success story.” What success? The fruits of Tinubu’s leadership is a nation on its knees.
The cost of this trip alone could fund relief for countless families. Instead, resources are squandered on a compendium launch and a website to glorify a presidency that has failed to deliver.
Bode Adeyemi, the coordinator behind this farce, claims Tinubu’s “Midas touch” has transformed Nigeria. Tell that to the families who can’t afford a meal or the businesses crippled by power outages. This is not leadership; it’s a masterclass in delusion.
Nigerians deserve better than leaders who prioritise foreign photo-ops over domestic despair. Wike, Umahi, Tunji-Ojo, and their entourage must cancel this shameful trip and face the reality at home. If Tinubu’s achievements are so remarkable, let them be showcased in the markets of Lagos, the villages of Kano, or the streets of Port Harcourt—not in London’s plush conference halls. Anything less is a betrayal of the people they claim to serve.
