Varsity Don Laments Earth Pollution , Proffers Solutions

From Kehinde Akinpelu, Ilorin An academic in the Department of Chemistry University of Ilorin, Prof. Uche Eke, has lamented that the Earth is being polluted at an unprecedented rate, a development that threatens all living things on the planet.
Eke made the call in his inaugural at the 165th Inaugural lecture of the university entitled “In search of the answer to unknown question”.
The chemistry don stressed that the world was confronted with excessive pollution of lands and seas, and urged Third World nations to support effort to clean the Earth .
His words: ”The present challenges that mother earth is facing and will face in the future require fresh ideas informed by new knowledge . They are challenges that are global in dimension, including flooding, soil aridity economic hardship and migration.”
According to him, the solutions to these challenges cannot be found in the now ancient history of the amalgamation of Nigeria and struggle for resources of the country.
He said the solution to the problems can only come from knowledge from a new Nigeria made possible by reorientation and re-education of society based by rule of law, self-esteem and tact.
Eke stated that there is need for environmental remediation, pollution control technique and technologies, safe disposal of waste and turning waste to wealth.
