Dung community in Jaban Kogo District in Kachia Local Government has been urged to sustain its culture even as it practices Christianity.
The admonition came from Dr. Ayuba Guga of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, while presenting a paper at the annual Dung District cultural day celebration held at Jaban Kogo on Saturday.
Speaking on the topic “My Culture, my Religion”, Dr. Guga said it was detrimental to the overall existence of a community to completely do away with its culture as it could result in loss of the community’s identity.
The Guest Speaker however advised the people to discard those elements of culture that conflict with the tenets of the Christian religion to have a smooth blend of the two.
The chairman of the occasion and a former staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Nathaniel Nyom called on the Dung Community to consider the alternative of agriculture as a cultural and more reliable source of livelihood against over dependence on oil revenue .
Mr. Nyom encouraged them to particularly plant Economic trees and ginger to boost their economic status.
In his address, the District Head of Jaban Kogo, Mr. Ali Danboyi advised sons and daughters of the district, resident in urban areas to pay attention to the development of the community, to improve the living conditions of the people.
The District head charged them to always promote peace to increase the pace of development of Dung community. Chairman, Dung Development Association, Mr. Jacob Kyom said the community was engaging its members, especially youth to be self-reliant and desist from indulging in vices inimical to their overall wellbeing.
Mr. Kyom appealed to the entire community to rise to the occasion of completing the on-going construction of the community Town Hall by reviewing their commitment to the project
The occasion also featured presentation of exercise books to pupils and students.
