The scourge of vote-buying and selling defied all strategies put in place by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the security architecture clamped around the Osun State Governorship Election at the weekend as the menace largely dictated the course of voting in the poll across party lines Saturday, July 16, 2022.
Be as it may, at the end of voting, vote sorting and collation of results the opposition People Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the election, Senator Ademola Adeleke polled 403,371 to defeat the sitting Governor of the State, Oyetola and the APC with 375,027 votes.
Hon. Lasun Yusuf of Labour Party (LP) came a distant third by polling 2,729 votes.
The PDP won 17 of the 30 Local Government Areas of the state, while the APC won the remaining 13.
The PDP won in Ede North, Ede South, Ifelodun, Boluwaduro, Egbedore, Odo Otin, Osogbo, Ila, Atakumosa West, Olorunda, Ilesa West, Obokun, Oriade, Orolu, Ife North, Irepodun, and Ejigbo local governments.
The APC, on the other hand, won in Boripe, Ilesa East, Ayedire, Ifedayo, Ife Central, Ayedaade, Iwo, Olaoluwa, Isokan, Atakumosa East, Irewole, Ife South, and Ife East local governments.
Fifteen15 political parties partook in the election.
Other candidates in the election were Akin Ogunbiyi of Accord Party; Oyegoke Omigbodun of Social Democratic Party; Segun Awojide of African Action Congress; Kehinde Atanda of Action Democratic Party; Awoyemi Lukuman of Allied Peoples Movement; Adebayo Elisha of All Peoples Party; and Adeleke Adedapo of Boot Party.
Rasaq Saliu of New Nigeria Peoples Party; Abede Samuel of National Rescue Movement; Ayowole Adedeji of Peoples Redemption Party; Ademola Adeseye of Young Peoples Party; and Adesuyi Olufemi of Zenith Labour Party also participated in the election.
The election was held across 3,763 units in the 30 local governments of the state and witnessed a huge voter turnout and was largely peaceful.
Of the 1,955,657 registered voters in the state, 1,479,595 Permanent Voter Cards were collected before the election.
Declaring Adeleke winner, Returning Officer for the election and Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said: “I Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, hereby affirmed that I am the returning officer for the governorship election held on Saturday, July 16 and the candidate polled the following votes: Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola, APC, 375,027; Ademola Adeleke, 403,371.
“I declare Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen, on behalf of the chairman of INEC, of the PDP, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected.”
All party agents signed the result sheet.
The EFCC reportedly nabbed three people over alleged vote-buying during the poll.
In their preliminary report on the election a coalition of over 80 civil rights organizations under the auspices of the Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room reported that vote buying and selling characterized the election.
In their second preliminary statement signed by its Co-conveners, Ene Obi, Asma’u Joda and James Ugochukwu, the coalition stated:
“There was open negotiation of buying and selling of votes well-coordinated by the polling agents in many of the polling units. There were no complaints from any of them against each other. Codes and coupons were used to extract commitments from voters as opposed to the blatant money exchanging hands observed in the Ekiti State Governorship election.
“From Situation Room’s observations, no violence has been recorded and the number of people who came out was encouraging. We commend the people of the State of Osun for coming out early to cast their votes, especially the elderly who waited in queues patiently.
“INEC’s deployment of materials and personnel should also be commended. Vote trading was recorded in most of the areas observed particularly outside Osogbo. As voting continues, we call on all stakeholders to maintain the peaceful atmosphere recorded so far.”
