Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has assured the leadership of the Bar in the state that he would continue to partner with them to entrench the rule of law and enhance access to justice.
Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday, while presenting Six Toyota Coaster Buses to the five branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Rivers State and the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Governor Wike stated that the collaboration with lawyers was necessary for the sustenance of justice delivery.
Wike, who was represented by the State Attorney-General, Emmanuel Aguma, (SAN), said: “The presentation of these buses is just a tip of the iceberg. We shall have several other avenues of engagement for the benefit of the legal profession”.
He noted that this was the first time in eight years that the Rivers State Government will be reaching out to lawyers by donating utility vehicles to them.
The governor charged the lawyers to carefully use the buses for the purposes that they were donated and in the interest of all their members.
Highpoint of the presentation was the handing over of the bus keys and particulars to the leadership of the NBA branches and the official of FIDA.
Chairman of the Port Harcourt Branch of the NBA , Dennis Okwakpam, who responded on behalf of other branch NBA chairmen commended Governor Wike for always living up to his promise.
He said the buses would serve the transportation needs of lawyers. He added that lawyers were exposed to risks while attending the last NBA National Conference in hired buses which broke down intermittently.
The Port Harcourt Branch NBA chairman said that Rivers State branches would formally appreciate the governor’s support in December.
