Youths in their hundreds took to the streets of Minna the Niger state capital on Monday to protest the removal from office of the chairman of the Katcha Local Government, Mohammed Dogo Liman.
The state government acting on a report of the House of Assembly which reportedly found the chairman guilty of fraud asked him to vacate office from yesterday (Monday).

The Assembly recently adopted the report of its committee on local government in which Liman was found to have illegally taken N23m from the local government purse, N20m of the amount being that of the Nigerian Union of Teachers Cooperative Society.

The protesting youths carried placards and sang war songs as they drove through the major streets of Minna.

They also took their protest to the state APC secretariat, the office of the Secretary to the government and the government house.

Leader of the protesters, Abdulkhadir Alfa, said the people of the local government were opposed to the removal of their chairman because “he has been doing a good job”.

Alfa said the suspended chairman ” is a man of the people who has touched the lives of many people”.

Reacting to the protest the Commissioner for Information Mr Jonathan Tsado Vatsa described the incident as “sponsored” but did not say who sponsored the demonstrations.

Vatsa said the removal of the chairman was ” based on the recommendation of the House of Assembly which found him guilty of fraud”.
